c1960s Goldtone and Faux Pearl Brooch by Corocraft

Description

This stylish brooch bears a brand name which belonged to one of America's most well-known jewellery companies - Coro. The company had been established in New York during the early years of the twentieth century, and its name is derived from the first two letters of the founders' surnames - Emanuel Cohn and Carl Rosenberger. Coro's tremendous success was based on its prolific output and diverse range of designs. Items were also priced to attract customers on a wide variety of budgets - in addition to the Coro name, the company sold costume jewellery under its 'Vendome' and 'Coro Craft' (later 'Corocraft') brands - this particular brooch displays the last of those names. The company ceased production in the United States in 1979, but continued in Canada until the 1990s. We understand that a factory was opened in England in 1933 to produce Corocraft items, and it is therefore possible that this item was made in the UK, rather than the US or Canada. It has a circular design (with an open centre), and is formed from a combination of 'brushed' metal and smooth, highly polished metal. Both types provide it with a gleaming goldtone finish, and an extra glow is added to the overall design by way of the lustrous faux pearls. The metal sections and the faux pearls have been formed into sweeping shapes, which radiate outwards from the centre of the brooch. Turning the brooch onto its reverse side reveals a textured metal finish, and a clasp with rollover safety catch. As mentioned earlier, the name 'COROCRAFT' is also present.

Condition

Excellent Plus. This attractive brooch has survived in highly desirable condition, and appears to have been rarely (if ever) worn. The metal is clean and bright on both the front and back of the brooch - there is minimal sign of wear or scratching to the metal, even when viewed with a magnifier. The faux pearls are all present, and they retain a smooth and glowing finish - close examination reveals their pearlised coating to be undamaged. The surface of the metal clasp pin shows no evidence of use, and the clasp itself closes securely.
