1950s/1960s Brown Bag made for Florsheim of London
Description
This attractive handbag was made for a retailer that we have not previously come across - 'Florsheim of London'. Our research reveals that the company name was James Florsheim & Co Ltd, and that the shop premises were at 106 Regent Street, London. In addition to handbags, Florsheim also sold jewellery (and in all likelihood a variety of other items). We can never remember seeing the Florsheim shop on Regent Street, but it would appear to have been a long-established business, as in 1956, it was celebrating its 25th anniversary at that address. The building itself is still there, and is now occupied by a fashion retail chain. This handbag features a rigid design, whose slim shape displays a straight back and a slightly curving front. The bag is formed from stiffened fabric in a deep brown colour, and with a finely-ribbed appearance. The back of the bag is undecorated, whilst the front has a centre section of pleated fabric, secured at each side by a fabric panel. The single handle is also made from two layers of the same brown fabric. A contrast to the dark fabric colour is provided by the gleaming, goldtone metal frame, clasp and handle fittings. The two sides of the clasp have a ridged design, which we think effectively echoes the texture of the fabric. Opening the clasp reveals an interior lined with mid-brown fabric, which displays a 'watered' effect, and a soft sheen. There is one, open-topped pocket. A black fabric label is attached to the interior bag frame, stating 'James Florsheim of London', in blue lettering.

Excellent Plus. This handbag looks to have been rarely, if ever used, and is consequently in very desirable condition. The fabric exterior is robust and unmarked, with even the base and corners showing minimal evidence of wear. The fabric handle is strong and firmly attached, and looks not to have been held. The metal elements have retained a gleaming goldtone appearance, with only the slightest of scratches to the interior frame. The fabric interior is in pristine condition. The clasp snaps shut tightly and securely.
