1920s/1930s Beaded Evening Purse
Description
Ornately-decorated, beaded purses from the 1920s and 1930s are becoming ever more difficult to find in clean and complete condition, and we were therefore delighted to come across this well-preserved example! All faces of the purse display intricate beaded patterns, set against a cream-coloured fabric background. The patterns are predominantly formed from small, white beads, which have a soft sheen, and which have been arranged into a mixture of blocks of colour and swirling single lines. Leaf shapes also feature in the design, and these have been accentuated with beads displaying soft beige tones and a subtly pearlised finish. The final bead type is a clear variety with a metallic, silvertone centre, which adds a bold, defining touch to the patterned shapes. The beading has been carried through to the side folds of the purse and to its base, which feature a greater degree of decoration than we would often expect to see. The back of the purse has been fitted with a beaded carrying strap. The purse flap is shaped to a gentle point, and it is held shut via a press stud fastening. Lifting the flap reveals an interior lined with pale-coloured fabric, displaying an attractive sheen. There is one pocket (with a gathered top edge), containing a handbag mirror; attention has been given to the mirror's design, as it features bevelled edges, and it is backed with fabric to echo the purse lining. Although the purse contains no label, we think it is likely to be French. France was a leading maker of beaded bags and purses during the first half of the twentieth century, and was renowned for producing high quality items with a richly-embellished appearance.

Very Good. As mentioned earlier, this fine purse has survived in very appealing condition, and must have been little used and carefully stored. The beading is in excellent condition, as the beads are clean and bright, and there appear to be none missing. A couple of the beige-toned beads have lost their pearlised coating, but their colouring blends well with the other beads, making this hard to detect. There are no weakened areas of beading, and the fabric base is also robust. Close examination of the fabric reveals some minor, age-related brown spotting in a few places, but this is slight and not easy to notice - it certainly does not detract from the ornately-beaded patterns which provide the purse with its eyecatching impact. The strap at the back of the purse is tight and secure, reinforcing the impression that it was rarely held. The fabric lining has retained its light colour and again shows little evidence of use. The mirror displays some age-related marking, but remains reflective. The press stud snaps shut securely. This beaded purse is certainly strong enough to be used on special occasions, and it would also make a charming vintage accessory for a bride!
