1920s/1930s Necklace with Pink Glass Beads, marked 9K
Description
It was the delicate design and eyecatching pink colour of the glass which stood out to us on first seeing this necklace! The upper section features a fine-linked chain and clasp, which display a golden finish. The clasp bears the inscription '9K', which indicates that the metal sections of the necklace have a 9 karat level of gold purity; we understand that within the United Kingdom, 9K is the minimum permitted standard for gold items. However, the focus of attention for the necklace is its lower section, which features alternating faceted pink beads and smooth, round beads in an opaque white shade. There are also openwork metal sections which display the same golden finish as the chain. Suspended from the lowest section is a pink glass drop, revealing varying depths of colour, and whose faceted edges catch the light to give softly shimmering effects. It is worth noting that, at 460mm in length, this elegant necklace is a larger size than many other examples we come across from the same period (which tend to be between 400 and 430mm long).

Condition
Excellent. This attractive necklace has survived the years very successfully, as it reveals only very minor evidence of age or wear. The opaque glass beads are smooth, and retain their pale colouring and soft sheen. The pink beads and drop are clean and bright, and we can see virtually no nicks to their glass, even when viewed with a magnifier. The chain and openwork sections display a smooth finish and a golden glitter when they catch the light; a few of the fine links have darkened over time, but this is not easily noticeable. The spring-ring clasp closes securely.
Material: 9K gold and glass
