1960s/1970s Black Lizard Skin Handbag
Description
We tend to more regularly see lizard skin handbags in varying shades of brown, which is why we were particularly pleased to find this example in black! It has a compact and classic design, and the lizard skin used for its rigid body displays a highly attractive sheen; sections of lizard skin have been joined at the centre of the bag, as can be seen by the vertical line on both the front and back faces. The handle displays an upper layer of lizard skin, and has a lower layer of smooth black leather. Lizard skin also features along the top of the bag frame, giving the bag a neat overall shape and finish. A contrast to the black is provided by the smooth and gleaming goldtone metal frame and clasp. The handle fittings are also goldtone metal, as are the four metal 'feet' on the bag base, which help to protect it from becoming scuffed. Pushing the clasp back reveals an interior lined with pale-coloured suede. There are two pockets, one of which is open at the top, whilst the other is secured with a metal zip. A label is attached to the suede, which states 'REAL LIZARD LONDON MADE ENGLAND', in gold-coloured lettering. There is also the outline of what looks to have been another label, originally attached to the suede beneath the zipped pocket; this perhaps stated the name of the handbag maker, or alternatively, the shop from which it was purchased. An inscription on the interior bag frame reads 'ELBIEF ENGLAND'; this refers to a Birmingham-based company (Elbief), which was founded during the 1930s and is still in existence. Our research on this company revealed that in the 1970s, it was describing itself as a 'leading international manufacturer of metal accessories for leather goods'. We regularly see the Elbief name on British handbags dating between the 1950s and the 1970s, as the company produced frames for a variety of British bag companies.

Condition
Excellent. This handbag must have been rarely used (and carefully stored) over the years, which would account for its impressive and highly desirable condition. The lizard skin body is undented, unscuffed and unscratched (including at the base and corners), and the black colouring has retained its depth. The handle gives the appearance of not being held, and the lizard skin sections along the top of the bag frame show no sign of wear. All the lizard skin areas display a polished sheen. The goldtone metal frame and clasp reveal a bright and gleaming finish, and display only the tiniest spots of wear - again, the absence of scratches or damage to the metal indicates that the bag was seldom used. The interior is in very appealing condition, with the pale-coloured suede almost completely free from any discolouration or marking. The clasp closes tightly and securely. Whilst the compact size of this handbag means it was never designed to hold a large number of items, we think it is a perfect way to add a touch of classic vintage style to a smart outfit!
