1960s Evening Bag made for Bergdorf Goodman, New York

Description

In our view, this shining clutch bag radiates an air of vintage sophistication! Its goldtone metal body features a rigid design, whose curving base fits the hand beautifully - as a consequence, the bag not only looks stylish and elegant when being carried, but it is comfortable to hold too. The metal primarily displays a textured finish (in the form of a diamond-shaped pattern), whilst the outer edges have been accentuated using smooth and polished metal. The bag flap features an attractive scalloped design, which is defined with a polished metal edging. Lifting the hinged flap reveals an interior lined with black fabric, which has a velvet-like appearance. We love the curved mirror which has been fitted to the underside of the flap, allowing the bag's owner to effortlessly check her make-up! A white label is attached to the lining fabric, which bears the 'BERGDORF GOODMAN' logo.

Bergdorf Goodman is a highly renowned department store, located on 5th Avenue, New York City. The company's history dates back to 1899, when Herman Bergdorf (who had emigrated to America from France) opened a tailor's shop in downtown Manhattan. Within just a few years, one of Bergdorf's employees - Edwin Goodman - had raised sufficient funds to buy a major stake in the business, which was renamed Bergdorf Goodman in 1901. The current Art Deco style store was opened on 5th Avenue in 1928, and has continued to grow and prosper in the years since. Its prestigious reputation has been built on offering luxury goods (frequently from famous name designers), in a smart and sophisticated setting. Judging from its regular appearances in films, books and television programmes, Bergdorf Goodman is held in high esteem as one of New York's most desirable shopping locations - fashionista Carrie Bradshaw (the lead character from 'Sex and the City') is portrayed as a loyal customer of the store!

Condition

Excellent. This striking evening bag is in highly desirable condition, as it reveals minimal evidence of age or use. It must have been carefully stored over the years, as the goldtone metal exterior shows no dents, scratches or scuffs. Close examination reveals one small spot of discolouration to the metal (next to one of the hinges), but this is a minor fault and the metal retains an impressively gleaming overall appearance. The interior mirror is completely clear, and the fabric lining is unmarked. The hinged design is robust, and the flap clicks shut tightly and securely. Whilst this clutch purse was never designed to hold a large number of items, it has an undeniably glamorous appearance, and we think the Bergdorf Goodman label just adds to its appeal!
