1940s Black Fabric Clutch Bag with Lucite Zip Pull

Description

In our experience, vintage clutch bags can often be  compact and narrow in design, but that description certainly does not apply to this particular item! It reflects the 1940s trend (particularly in America) to carry large-sized fabric clutch bags, which often incorporated a decorative element made from clear plastic - the latter tends to be generally  referred to by the trade name Lucite, although there were many other such names, including Perspex and Plexiglas. The plastic itself was a hardwearing acrylic resin, which had only been relatively recently introduced; it was developed during the late 1920s and early 1930s, and in the Second World War saw widespread use (for example within aircraft canopies), as a safer alternative to glass.

This particular handbag features a long rectangular shape, made from black, finely-ribbed fabric. The bag shows the same design on front and back (incorporating a central 'T'-section), and the fabric also forms a base with rounded ends. The 'T'-sections and base have a stiffer texture than the softly pleated areas at either end, thereby supplying the bag with a more rigid shape and structure. The zip which runs along the top edge of the bag is concealed by the raised fabric sides, leaving only the goldtone metal chain and Lucite zip pull visible. The latter displays a diamond shape, with an indented arrow being used to subtly embellish the smooth, clear plastic. The interior of the bag is lined with black fabric, which has an attractive sheen. There is one open-topped pocket, and attached to this (via a cord) is a matching fabric coin purse with goldtone metal clasp. Although no maker's label or country of origin is displayed on this handbag, it appears very likely to have been made in America.

Condition

Excellent. We are pleased to say that this striking clutch bag reveals very little evidence of age or use! The exterior fabric is robust and intact, and has an unmarked appearance. It is possible that its black shade has lightened slightly over the years, and there is some very superficial rubbing to the top edge of the fabric, but these are minor faults, and do not detract from a very well-preserved overall appearance. The goldtone metal chain is bright, and the Lucite zip pull is clean, clear and unscratched. The zip works smoothly and efficiently. The interior is in highly desirable condition, as neither it nor the coin purse show any sign of use. This desirable clutch bag has the benefit of being a practical size, but more than that, we think it is a fine example of a distinctively 1940s fashion trend!
