1950s Black Handbag with Decorated Frame by Fabrique, USA
Description
This handbag stood out to us for its simple, yet striking design, which features a gleaming pearlised section along the front of its frame. The tall body of the bag has been constructed using black, felt-type wool fabric over a stiffened base. Narrow black piping adds definition to the gently curving side edges and bottom corners. The fabric at the back is smooth and flat, whilst the bag front has been subtly embellished with a decorative stitched outline, producing a raised effect. The handle is made from the same robust black fabric, and it is attached to the bag frame via goldtone metal rings. The curved frame and the bag clasp are made from gleaming goldtone metal, with the clasp ends displaying an acorn-like design. As previously mentioned, attached to the front of the frame is a section of plastic, which is generally referred as Lucite. Lucite was the trade name for a strong, clear plastic, patented by American chemical company Du Pont in the 1930s; it was a frequent feature of American womens' accessories during the 1950s, particularly handbags. Colour and decorative effects were regularly added to the plastic, as can be seen in this handbag, where the white colour of the plastic and the softly glowing finish contrasts with the intense matt black of the fabric. The interior of the bag is lined with smooth black fabric, and there are two pockets. One of the pockets is secured with a metal zip, whilst the other is open topped. Printed on the latter in gold-coloured lettering is the inscription 'Fabrique Made in U.S.A.' A pleasing extra touch where this bag is concerned is the presence of an unusual handbag mirror within the pocket; rather than being a rectangular shape, this mirror is round and is printed with the words 'Fabrique Bag' - its reverse side and edges have been given a gold-coloured finish.

Condition
Excellent Plus. This stylish handbag looks to have been rarely used, as it displays minimal evidence of age or wear. The black fabric exterior is clean and the colour has retained its intensity. The fabric is in robust condition throughout, showing no damaged or weakened areas, even at the base and corners. The fabric handle is strong and firmly attached, and it reveals little evidence of having been held. The goldtone metal frame is smooth, shining and virtually unscratched. Its white decorative feature has survived in impressive condition, as it has a smooth and radiant finish, with no scuffs or scratches. The black fabric interior is equally well preserved, showing a clean and unused appearance. The mirror is clear and shows little sign of its age. The clasp snaps shut tightly and securely. In our view, this is a versatile handbag in great condition, which deserves to be carried and enjoyed!
